Giles & Angel Armstrong
The Armstrongs lead retreats at our Colorado, New York, and Texas locations.
Giles and Angel came to SonScape Retreats after 26 years of ministry, 4 years in a group home taking care of wayward youth and 22 years serving in the local church. In 2019, they were chosen to lead SonScape Retreats when Larry and his wife, Barbara, began their transition out of the leadership role.
Giles’ pastoral career took them from a small rural church where he served for 8 years to a large growing church for 14 years. He has served in a variety of roles, beginning as a youth pastor then pastor of a small rural church to family pastor, executive pastor, and finally lead pastor of a growing church with a large staff. He and Angel have always served as a team with Angel serving alongside him in a variety of roles, both volunteer and paid, from worship leader, children’s coordinator to administrative director and counselor.

Giles was born in Zambia Africa and lived in Botswana, South Africa, Oman in the Middle East and England before coming to college in the US where he met Angel who was born and raised in Nebraska.
In 2006, while serving in their third ministry, they came to SonScape where they discovered life giving teaching that provided a healthy pattern for future ministry. As two-time alumni, Giles and Angel’s passion is to see those in ministry healthy and whole. Having walked (and at times run) the ministry path, they understand the need to listen to Jesus’ call in Matthew 11:28, to come away with Jesus to a quiet place and experience His rest in order to trade our burdens for His blessing and to serve out of a place of renewal.
When not serving, Giles and Angel love hiking and riding their motorcycles.

Derek: SonScape was a huge blessing to me. It had just the right amounts of relevant content, social interaction, time as a couple, and much needed rest. I’m heading home with a clear plan and a refreshed attitude toward life and ministry. I only wish it was longer!
Carla: I was at a point of exhaustion physically, mentally, spiritually. I knew I needed a place of refuge to remove myself from my current reality. My husband is in full-time ministry and I am his team mate. I am also a school teacher. My husband included me in his sabbatical trip. I am so very thankful he did. During our stay at SonScape, we were provided time to rest. The rest came in numerous ways. Time for resting in the words of comfort from talented leaders. Time for resting in the beauty of God’s magnificent creation. Time for resting in the scriptures and God time. Also time to rest my body from the normal on-the-go setting. God knew just what I needed in His perfect time. SonScape helped me work through areas of hurt. I encourage all ministry couples to take this opportunity to bring about refreshment to your walk with God, with your spouse, and with God’s people.
I’ve been in full-time ministry for nearly 20 years and for the first time – with illumination from the Holy Spirit and the help from our retreat leaders – I feel I’ve received a new freedom to be who God has made me to be. Working through hurts from the past and connecting to more recent hurts, I now have wonderful tools to work through them to a life of greater purpose and joy.
Ministry life is often busy with a pace that wears one out. The opportunity to experience God’s rest as I experienced stillness, solitude, and Sabbath was soul ministering at its very best. The personal attention to my particular ministry setting was so helpful. I would recommend SonScape to any pastor whether’s he’s struggling or he just needs a week to unwind. Oh, and the setting in the mountains of Colorado couldn’t be better! The pace of the retreat forces one to slow down and experience God’s presence – something tragically missing in so many ministry contexts today!
